In 1977
a small group of local history enthusiasts laid the groundwork for what would become
Comunn Eachdraidh Nis (Ness Historical Society) and provide the catalyst for what would
later develop into the wider Comunn Eachdraidh movement in the Western Isles.
Much has been achieved over the past twenty-five years, but such is the depth and value of
the rich culture, social history and language of north Lewis that much still remains to be
done......... |

The above sentiment captures the
strong feeling of ‘c�analas’ felt by many of those who were forced, through
poverty or circumstance, to seek a new life far from family, friends and their Scottish
homeland.
