| The Western
Isles – or Outer Hebrides – forms part of a 130 mile long chain of
islands that lie about forty miles of the north west coast of mainland
Scotland. There are 790 Scottish islands, of which twelve in the western
Isles are inhabited with a combined resident population of about 26,000.
Apart from being the most
northerly district in the Western Isles, Ness also has the distinction
of being the most northwesterly community in the European Union. The
district of Ness consists of sixteen villages, mainly scattered along
the coastal plains that lie along its northern and western coasts. The
current population of Ness is about 1,300 people. |
