Because
of the difficulties in getting onto the island as a result of the difficult terrain, and
especially as it is not accessible at high tide, we decided to bypass this route by
erecting a Tyrolean traverse from the Lewis mainland side, to the island. This is a span
of approximately 60 feet across a chasm which drops 45 feet onto rounded boulders below.

ropes.
