Rope access

Because of the difficulties in getting onto the island as a result of the difficult terrain, and especially as it is not accessible at high tide, we decided to bypass this route by erecting a Tyrolean traverse from the Lewis mainland side, to the island. This is a span of approximately 60 feet across a chasm which drops 45 feet onto rounded boulders below.

Ian and Chris spent the first three days (14th-16th May) setting up the ropes.

This system allows us to cross over to the island whenever we need to. It has made the working conditions much easier, as we no longer have to consider the tides. It also makes access much safer, as we have no need to scramble down slippery rocks.

It also makes our journey to work every day a little more interesting…
